Sorry again if these are stupid questions but I could not find a lot of advice regarding these topics on the internet or the forums. 

They report the income on their tax returns, you need to issue them a 1099 if you pay anyone more than $600 (you can download them from the internet or get them at an office supply store) by January 31 of the following year.

I would suggest, as others have stated, that you ask for a copy of the deployment orders, be aware of everything in your lease, (which should have a 30 day notice clause for military breaking lease [not an attorney, don't play one on the internet]), and verify when the notice to quit was submitted.
