You use the barn as a workshop and if you plan on selling the home the new owner can do same or use it as storage, garage or whatever. 

@Russell Brazil Forestville, MDI ended up finding out by happenstance that they were having a Section 8 workshop/class for landlords and attended. 

Also, I wonder if going to work shop or conference could help.

I went to a workshop recently at South Lake Tahoe, and I tried to tell people there that if they want to see development in their OZ, there needs to be concessions from the city/county in fees if they want to make this work.
