Some where down the line, my mother who owns a multi-property in NYC, informs me that she would like to place the property under my name.

If the mother just passed away it is possible that the house needs to go through a probate hearing and if their are other children it could take a while. 

My mother owns a house in Kansas it’s worth 140-150k she has a heloc for 65k on it the rest is paid for.

Her mother passed away....Owner Financed - Asking 35,000 - Terms 5,000 down 600/month...this was a 3 story victorian style home with 3 APARTMENTS IN IT, in a college town!!!

When our permanent residence was build we made sure part of it was set it up to be finished as a mother in law/ duplex.

In my area I see a lot of "Mother In-Law" apartments and other non-legal 1 bedroom tack ons... often these are garage conversions. 

We bought a home in town that has a mother in law suite with its own entrance and we're renting it out on airbnb.
