Looking to buy duplex/triplex/fourplex in Illinois, mainly looking at western suburbs near Woodridge, Lombard, Lisle areas and do a house hack.

Someone else can chime in with the good southern, southeastern or south western areas.IMHO there is no reasons to invest in central (unless you want a trophy strip condo) or the north east (unless you REALLY know the area, live near by and and speak at least a couple languages.)Talk to a couple local property managers and ask them for suggestions on areas and price ranges.

If you are interested at all in the Cleveland area, we have several suburban 2 and 3 family properties that will be available in the near term as one of our west coast based investment clients is divesting. 

I'm looking to start investing on the east coast as this would be my first leap into the real estate world.

During the great recession (which, keep in mind, was driven by a real estate collapse) rent prices (as measured by investment grade rentals) dropped around 6.2% in western markets which were hit the hardest.

I have been looking into flipping homes trying to find good deals, when I ran into someone from new western acquisitions.
