I know that's not the Rich Dad Poor Dad school of thought, but often (especially in stable flat growth markets - many today in 2018) buying a residence is not often any kind of investment (just a big liability).  

The market upturn was responsible for most of that growth, and we are now in a 330 house that has an attached apartment.

The issue with that strategy is that you are handcuffing the growth of your tax-sheltered retirement savings. 

I credit a huge portion of my growth in REI to BP and am thankful to have found such a resource. 

On top of that, the last 4-5 years the growth and revitalization of downtown has been impressive.
