Cant be too expensive since they wont comply with loan limits or pass the self sufficiency test (3-4 units only), but cant be too cheap/distressed or they wont pass FHA inspection. 

Two of the safe harbors for unforeseen circumstances under the -3 reg are The cessation of employment as a result of which the qualified individual is eligible for unemployment compensation (as defined in section 85(b)) AND A change in employment or self-employment status that results in the taxpayer's inability to pay housing costs and reasonable basic living expenses for the taxpayer's householdOP will want to make sure he meets both the ownership and use test for the property. 

Won't do no harm to try, just for a few test runs then :)

Also do a saliva alcohol test too. 

I test drove TC and they wouldn't let me onboard non-US citizen's (here legally) and I have some residents on visa here.Plus, Buildium has a great app for the residents and this is going a long way with my number one requested item to provide.

Although the taxpayers owned and used their old house as a principal residence for at least two of the five years before the sale, the Code Sec. 121 exclusion didn't apply because they never lived in the new house and it was never used as their principal residence.Based on that, looks like the construction period doesn't count towards your use test.
