Personally, I'd either: - Repair it this fall (when neither heating or cooling companies have a lot of business) - Wait for the next big repair and just replace the whole thing. 

I turn it down to 72 a few hours before the guests arrive.In the winter, the heat is set to 58 and I turn it up to 68 a few hours before guest arrive.I do watch the temp in the house to make sure the guests are setting it a 60 in the summer and leaving all the windows open.

Stove was dented, broken heating coil in oven, broken shelf bars in fridge, etc.

Never had an issue but am told (the house is professionally managed) that maintenance on it is intensive between checking chemicals in the water, maintaining the water levels with heavy use (and water temperature by extension since it takes 24 hours to heat up to normal operating temp after refilling), filters, hair, other cleaning etc etc etc

The sellers noted in their disclosures that they had 1) a gas furnace for heating and 2) a heat pump system for cooling.

It was a lot of lost sleep, heated exchanges and multiple trips to JP court.

@Allison W Gammon well whether or not you fight for the credit, there are some very good incentives for heat pumps in the new bill.

Many areas have cheap loans or free loans as options to address the issues of energy efficiency that many homes have like insulation, heating and cooling systems, electrical and paint.
