Assuming your pile of cash wasn’t an inheritance or gift or something similar, it sounds like you’re savvy with your money and have made good choices thus far.

This ties into the college questions, because if becoming a real estate agent is not possible, my next best choice is to get a degree and work a regular job, until I have the money to start investing in real estate.Sorry for so many questions,-Noah Norton

If given the choice I'd rather build the larger portfolio for the 10 years and then decide on the best plan of action at the end of the 10 years as you transition into retirement. 

From your profile picture it seems that you don’t mind the snow, so Grand Rapids is a good choice for a 4 season City with a booming economy which is always ranking in the top 10 of the countries best for this and that!  

Especially since lenders require "reserves" anyways (given SF Bay Area price points local to me, this can be absurd amounts of money), which can be stocks or index funds -- mortgage #7 may very well require $150k in "reserves," which is your choice of money in a checking account earning you nothing, or index funds that you find appealing anyways.
