I am looking into other nearby lots to see what is available but wondered if anyone has experience with this sort of dilemma and whether its worth the effort.

QuickBooks may seem expensive, but once set up does a great job at tracking the business with little effort. 

May not be a popular view now a days, but I think I'll stick with my business plan :) Neat story and it’s very noble of an effort on your part  .

If anyone but the tech people behind those efforts will make money is an open question. 

I think it is more of a case by case basis and really depends on several things, including:The level of competency to understand and implement the system in house or outsourcedYour timeline and how much effort you're willing to put into itYour budgetYour goalsOther systems you're already using that you may want to integrate withFeatures you may requireSimplicity vs capability, sometimes there are tradeoffs between systemsetc...Depending on a combination of the above as well as many other factors, one solution might lend itself more to your situation than others.
