I have learned to do some drywall patching and skim coating myself via YouTube tutorials.

There's a sales person around every corner in Latin America and their sugar-coated pitches are not always trustworthy.If you're thinking about Chile, spend a month there. 

@Danual Berkley It could have been rented as-is but we put in a fresh coat of paint and made some repairs to the porch railings due to safety concerns. 

Example: if you need to add a fresh coat of paint and install new LVP flooring in a room, it would be wise to paint first and then do the flooring last, so you don’t get all that paint all over your new floors.

You will likely give up $10's of thousands of dollars by doing so.Once it is vacant, make minor repairs to ensure everything is neat and functional, give it a fresh coat of interior paint, then polish everything including the windows!

Replace all the carpet with vinyl flooring, fresh coat of paint and find a tenant where the parents pay the rent.  

It usually doesn't need as many coats to finish the project and the quality of paint serves you much better in terms of mitigating smell, wear and tear over time, wash-ability etc.

If you remove the paneling and install drywall you will have to install mud rings for all electrical boxes or other fixes to get the boxes to line up as the drywall is thicker.
