Hello - I own a duplex in Bracebridge, Ontario, Canada - the largest issue I have has been property management - I live in BC, and there are not many property management companies in Muskoka that handle long term rentals - many do air bnb properties, but most property owners who rent long term do the management on their own. 

Settlling is probably better off because if you argue you are operating this illegally then you're in for my problems.But here is the thing in terms of prevention and hindisght.

Majority of communities (both SFH and condos) have HOA's which prevent it.

I would say the MOST important things are 1) communication with your guests and getting good reviews, along with 2) having a vetted team (handyman, cleaners, etc.). and 3) document EVERYTHING regarding issues and Air BnB will take care of you (without documentation you're out of luck).
