or they can spend time interviewing facilitators like agents and travel to the market. out of state investors come in all kinds. some fly to the market and look for themselves some never do. the ones that never do have the problems. take one trip is what I recommend 

I would interview and network to find a low cost brokerage that has experience in management or STRs. 

I do this every day, do lots of due diligence, visit the markets we do projects in, and have to do it as an intermediary and I also work with and interview builders every day

Then you can interview them to see if they fit you investing strategies.
