On another foreclosure we had to tear out the old narrow unsafe stairs to the upper level & built a completely new set of stairs 4ft wide & to code.

Both of you must go into this fully educated and with eyes wide open.

Normal Screw down roof valleys are about a foot wide and this is about 2 foot wide, using my fore arm as a gauge.

It's a cautionary tale, but your results may be very different so just go in with eyes wide open.  

I've seen some really cool garage mods that actually leave the roll up door (though put in a stylish one) because it allows them to provide wide open access to an outside patio or lawn area and really expand the "living space."

With inventory extremely low in Kansas City, you'll need to cast your net as wide as you can.
