I have quite a bit of cash in my high yields savings and about 300k in my 401k/IRA portfolio (how much is actually mine vs IRS after management fees I have no idea.)  

note investing is difficult here in the US and is a relationship business, I am sure there are mortgages you could buy in the UK but if you are just getting started, then trying to do note investing overseas to me would seem near impossible.

It would be a good idea to network with some local investors to see if investing locally matches with your short and long terms investing goals.

I think your best is to keep reading and above all build your network reach out to local investors and ask what they need help with.I work with special needs kiddos and we often call investors, lawyers, etc. and ask them how we can create an intern program where we help them and learn the business at the same time.

Any ideas on how to make this work without having to pay off the mortgage?

Especially since I am currently sitting in one and very intrigued with this business model.
