You could have a 20 year note and no activity for 9 years, the issue is not a statute of limitations terminating the obligation, the issue is a note holder abandoning the obligation from failure to actively seek payment, you can lose your rights to collect by walking away so to speak, but if collections are continued over the term the obligation remains valid.
