The key is to identify a top firm and get your foot in the door then do way more than you're paid to do, offer to help out on projects or teams above your job description.

If there is a felony, I would pay particular attention to whether there is a history there that would tend to make you think that it is a continuing pattern... related misdemeanors, common interactions with the police, etc.
