We paid full price for it which wasn't ideal, but my wife became pretty emotionally attached to it and it is in a good location for a family home, great area etc ( but I know I didn't get a great deal on price)Unfortunately or fortunately, I am being transferred to the UK at short notice,and my long term plans for the house are up in the air.

Ideally, you can get the seller to fix as many things as possible, but it depends on the market...With a 3/2 in Dallas that is in fairly good condition (no structural issues) and well maintained, I think your 3-5K reserves could get you going provided your roof, HVAC ( key in TX) plumbing, appliances and major systems have some useful life left.
