@Michael Johnson, I've not used a mentor for REI, but a mentor is definitely worth the money... assuming it's the right person and someone you truly admire and trust.I look at it this way... spend 10 years developing the experience, or pay someone for their decade or more of experience so you can take advantage of the shortcut.
