He seemed like a straight shooter who knows how to make money and was familiar with the local real estate. what are the terms of your portfolio loans like, and what was the benefit over doing individual loans?

They are straight shooters and good people.  

I would think there might be easier ways for someone with such notoriety to make money being a straight-shooter in RE and "leave a legacy" for his/her family.

One thought I was a total idiot and that they would take advantage of me, the other was a straight shooter and honest.

Sorry for the tough love.I would recommend figuring out what is most important in your life and start making daily decisions that best accomplish those goals and, most importantly, stop making decisions that lead you in the opposite direction (financial or other).This is a pragmatic forum with a lot of straight shooters who keep it real.
