I wanted to clarify that one needs to have a rental property, with claimed income, before you can write off expenses associated with it like travel (gas or airfare) to check on it, correct?  

It's about tax time and I do intend to claim the rents on taxes.

That looks pretty cool to me and it wouldn't bother me at all in a residential space however it wouldn't work for all properties/ locations/ customers.  

This fall the county will put a new public access in upstream, and because of the particular course of this river it would take literally three minutes to shuttle customers to that put-in, from which they'd have a very scenic four-mile drift downstream and take out right at their cars at our place.

I guess if the rebate amount is substantial and requires an active electric account to claim the rebate, it may be worthwhile to wait till your turn the unit around to install new systems and appliances when the account is temporarily in your name.
