We removed the seriously charred material, and because smoke is greasy, I hired a fire damage cleaning company, that has lime green trucks, to come in and scrub down the plaster walls, ceilings, and floors, Of course any and all fibrous material such as carpets , and cork boards in the kitchen and kids rooms had been removed and disposed of .

An electrician we trust said that as long as the wiring looks to be in good shape, and is working, we can keep it as long as it's holding only 15 amps and we re-distribute heavier loads to new wiring (like in the kitchen, for example).

So I end up at roughly $8/sq ft total for tile unless I'm installing it in a basement or the bottom level of a trilevel.For me, I typically install tile in the bathrooms and kitchen.

My own method was to have the contractor (his idea, too) put down a thin wood underlayment (adhesive or minimal nailing) then we went with linoleum on that (it was in kitchen/bath).

When the deal closed, the kitchen ran rampant with roaches, the carpets were filthy, and the place just had a musty, roach-y smell throughout.The carpets are ripped out and most of the roaches are gone now.
