I know there are internationals who buy property in the USA but wondering if there were Americans who were buying property outside of America.   

The local Bank of America branch has specifically told me that they will finance purchases via LLCs, though I have not tried it.

Wells Fargo, Bank of America, etc. are notorious for taking applications and telling you everything is great, and then coming back with stipulations or denials that should have been mentioned long before an application was taken or credit was ran.
