Make decisions more based on school systems (if your investing in family homes,) crime, home ownership vs investment properties, rental pricing, etc.Also... start putting together a team.

The old houses in Baltimore, 100 years in your case, can need substantial work to replace very dated wiring, plumbing and heating systems.

All the work is done upfront when buying the note then once it is acquired if you have a system in place and coordinate with your special servicer, servicer and attorney etc. your a manager managing them and checking in on making sure they are meeting deadlines.

If they see knob and tube, asbestos, water in basement, or mold they generally freak out.....even if it may be less than $2000 to fix. 

You see this setup when the soil is hard clay and effluent cannot percolate sufficiently for a septic system.
