What's your best piece of advice or tip when starting out managing a STR?

I am currently house hacking and renting my basement through my LLC. 

Focus on saving up and doing a house hack.

I am looking at a property with a property management service in place and they charge 40% for each rental.

but... in my experience, you will be in a stronger position if you build a network of humans by going to real estate meetups and really learning a market.for example - here in Pittsburgh we have a lot of old houses that need big rehabs. and the best software / AI in the world can't help me, because it doesn't know the conditions of the interior, the sewer line, etc. for most of them. 

.$3K spent on inspections with no house to my name yet. 

A lot of my friends and other new grad young professionals seem to congregate in areas like Midtown and lower Manhattan or in Williamsburg/Bushwick and Downtown Brooklyn.I know house hacking isn't impossible in NYC, but my most ideal areas with people my age and high traffic are also everyone else's ideal places to live, and are much harder to house hack.
