I have a decent amount of multifamily down there in Birmingham but I'm targeting Huntsville for future purchases.

I need to put in the work and target a market like you suggested. 

Taking into account that you have probably made prior analysis that you can turn a profit by renting property in a specific area, I would set a target goal for myself in terms of profitability (also taking into account the future costs associated with maintaining the property, e.g repairs, repaints, etc).

@Leah Bates if you don't have a specific target property yet, I don't think the end of your lease and potentially closing on a property are actually going to be too far apart. 

Rule of thumb, to always check the employment and growth prospects for any targeted area.

I spoke to our accountant and he said that the income from flipping would be taxed at our tax bracket and may additionally need to pay social security tax, etc.

I'm still searching for target areas but am considering Brewerytown, Point Breeze, Fishtown, Fairmount, or any of the surrounding areas that have positive cash flowing potential and relatively low crime rate.
