Well sure enough, wood decomposes and leaves voids. 

You may even find an open floor plan and hidden hard wood floors lol.

I’m currently transforming cabinets and trim from wood to white (trim, doors, hall cabinets) and grey (kitchen & utility room cabinets).

The cause was that the pier supports were on wood, not rock or cement blocks and termites and gotten into the floor joists, piers, and the wooden support for the piers. 

It should give you some starting Insurance info to consider:Here are some things to look for from an Insurance prospective:1.Any in-ground tanks (active or inactive)2.Any Knob & Tube or Aluminum Wiring3.If built before 1978, does the building have Lead Safe certifications4.Any wood stoves or secondary heating units.
