The old Romex is not safe to use with fixtures which generate significant heat (ie. pot lights), so be on the lookout for that.I looked at a house just last week which had been wired with General Electric BradX 12/2 Pb NMD-3 wiring.

The heating system will determine whether landlord is paying heat - I'd bet that the landlord is paying heat, since many of these conversions were done back in the days when energy was cheaper and the effort to split the heat was more than the payback in energy savings.
