My tips essentially boil down to the compounding effect of a lot of good decisions over a long period of time/slow and steady wins the race.

However, in my opinion, since you are a new investor, completing a successful transaction and allowing yourself to gain experience by getting a win under your belt is more valuable than the Return on Effort itself.

There is no downside to appealing your taxes and there is a very good chance you will win.

@Jay Hinrichs Yes there are the two tiered systems and discounts on property taxes for owners in certain groups however sometimes I think the only one who is winning in the system when you add these complexities is the government jobs. 

What this means is that if you see an HOA suing a homeowner, just because you win the auction, the property isn't free and clear - any superior liens will still be attached to the property.

Remember to create a win-win on this type of situation.
