If you don't have any real plans whatsoever for the money, then you can consider that it's making a more-or-less nominal 3% or so (the cost of borrowing money today), which is better from a return standpoint than sitting in the bank doing nothing but also locks up a lot of liquidity, which is also an important part of any asset.

Basically, if you want the benefits that come with a real estate license, you have to hang it with an active Broker and pay your nominal $2k dues/fees (my brokerage is a little less than that, but I know others can go higher).

It's done with the understanding that the call is not free consulting, rather more of an interview to determine if my practice and the prospect are a good fit.If a higher percentage of my calls were those focused solely on fees ("price shoppers"), those fishing for free advice, those with not a lot of complexity that I would have to turn down, etc, I might consider charging a nominal fee to like the previous poster mentioned.
