If I called the police and reported someone moved into my vacant rental and I just discovered it today, the police would go out to investigate.

I personally saw this happen in a case (not mine since this case was prior to mine) where an apartment manager was evicting based on a 'no gun' lease violation after police investigated a discharge in an apartment.
