I primarily use the 401k and IRA for exposure to the stock market although I do hold a commercial REIT in my IRA as well.

True, they can get less exposure time in the lobby or hotel restaurant in a crowded hotel. 

Irregardless, I definitely agree with you, and with many of the other folks that've posted, that the time is now - better to gain the experience and exposure to the market rather than delay.

You can chart a path that includes a mix of conventional retirement plan and outside investments such as real estate, and create multiple sources of income with different tax exposures.

So I can either get into politics (which I am not going to do), or I can mitigate my exposure.

Unemployment is certainly a risk, the exposure of residential real estate to commercial real estate decline due to the large number of AirBNBs is a risk.
