I could get an apartment but I think house hacking would be more worth while. any tips and insight as to get started quickly or should I rent an apartment for a year so I have more time to plan?

The Airbnb paid for almost all the expenses of owning the home and my "rent" was just putting $200-300 away each month in savings for maintenance and capex.

@Shivani Brijmohan, while I cannot speak to NY, I will say in general:You should know how the property will be reassessed when you buy the property.  

Whenever I speak to a group of students interested in real estate, I always stress the importance of networking and simply asking people to coffee.
