We never expected this to become our introduction into investing, but I think it’s definitely a strong lesson about keeping emotion out of any future deals!

Remember why you want to do this in the first place and how it is more important than a temporary setback. 

I'm seeing a lot of conversations lately with owners who are targeting military towns for the exact situation you're in -  people moving in and out of duty assignments who need temporary housing while they locate a place to live.

I’m assuming something like the 50% rule for the $1,250 for the condo, so assuming I’ll be covering an additional $500 or so for the mortgage a month.I feel like this is the right thing to do for me from an emotional perspective in getting the place for them.

If you make an offer to accommodate, charge market rent plus a premium right from the get go and put it in writing this accommodation is temporary, burdensome and only because you are bending over backward.

It takes all of the emotion out of it. 

The rest it is either explicitly illegal in the entire state (Such as California), or part of the state (Such as Texas where it is illegal in Dallas and Austin).Specifically in California where the question is being asked about, both the prospective tenants, as well as DEFH (Department of Fair Employment and Housing) can bring suit against the landlord and collect "seeking remedies that may include recovery of out-of-pocket losses, an injunction prohibiting the unlawful practice, access to housing that the landlord denied, damages for emotional distress, civil penalties or punitive damages, and attorney’s fees."

.- Displays any negative emotion whatsoever, particularly anger or aggression - no matter how subtle.

While this post was obviously not rigorous in scope or research, I hope that for you, like for me, just walking through some high-level reasoning helps check the emotional answer to tough questions.In times like these, that could be just the sort of immunization we need to keep making good decisions.
