If I'm reading the Illinois Rental Property Utility Service Act correctly, it looks like 7 days is required: "This Section does not prohibit temporary utility shutoffs in cases of emergencies such as gas leaks or fire or, upon 7 days written notice to each affected tenant, temporary shutoffs required for building repairs or rehabilitation."

Be sure that you have a way to reasonable deal with an emergency issue if it were to arrive, if not in cash, at least with a line of credit or something at a reasonable interest rate.

Unfortunately in today's uncertain world where one job loss or medical problem can put one's health and finances in jeopardy and if  due to emergency you have to sell the property or properties  after holding on say 20 plus years then it becomes a huge burden unless one puts aside that money every year as a contingency.
