Here's a way to build credit while in college: many times on college campuses there are numerous credit card companies that offer guaranteed approvals or  get a free gift with immediate credit card approval.

I don't buy used either.To save money on appliances, I usually buy discount gift cards online from Ebay or Cardcookie (best to buy them in January as people try to offload xmas gifts).

You can possibly gift the funds to him, but I am not sure if this will create a tax issue.

A family member entitled to the commission may also provide it as gift funds to the borrower.

They said it would have to be documented as a gift but it's not an issue.
