We got used to Mahalo this past summer with a trip to Oahu and the Big Island.  

If you stain the cabinets, switch them out, retile the kitchen, add a backsplash, knock a wall down and put in an island to open things up.

Just to give you some perspective I've lived on Long Island where the taxes are stupid high and outrageous.

Island countertop is not even connected to cabinet.
