You can't assess damage fully and you might have a mess getting them out. 

Once you have done that things will smell better unless there are fixtures that have been damaged too (cabinets), so be on the lookout.

I Want control on who is living there and the metrics I use to screen them but the best return on my investment and reduce overturn and damage to property. 

They should obtain a renters' policy that both will cover their personal belongings and give you some protection for unintentional damage they cause as a result of a cooking fire or the like.Hope that helps!
