It's not real estate, but it is rental property that you can occasionally live in. 

@Jeff Rodgers Yeah, multiple offers do happen occasionally on properties that have been sitting on the market for a while.

Occasional PMs will not notify owners of a new lease signed, but that never should have happened when the property was for sale, as rental income is a huge factor when purchasing a property. 

If you enjoy spending your time at the river with a pan in your hand, you can occasionally find a nugget of gold, but the guy that builds the flour mill is much more likely to feed his family well.

A credit union in my market will occasionally lend to out of state investors on commercial properties so there may be on there as well.

Yes occasionally you can find something with a twist that might break even but generally it will be illegal in some way or unsustainable.However other parts of NZ are definitely do-able.

We have relatively good systems for check in, cleaning, etc. but we need someone that can do occasional house checks, meet contractors if necessary, and respond to specific issues. 

I occasionally have free time at work and use google maps to "drive" around the particular areas I'm interested in and find potential properties there.
