I've been quoted 5YR ARM amortized over 20 in the 4.25% region & 5YR ARM amortized over 15 in the 4.75% neighborhood.

Well, that's basically what happened in the 08/09 collapse, but on top of that there were bet's made on each card paying, and bet's on those bets, all done with hundreds of millions each, imagine doing this with credit cards that have a $1 trillion credit line and you started by bouncing $700 billion.At the same time the prevailing mortgages were ARM's, that had all but 0 qualifying and started with a "teaser" rate, which is a significantly reduced mortgage payment from what the ordinary payment would be, to the sum of as much a 1/3 of the regular payment.
