Simple answer, depends how extensive is the remodel will be.

A few months ago I bought an abandoned multi family property at a tax auction conducted by the city marshal.

Met a wholesaler while conducting an inspection on another house he had sold.

@Mike A.Hi Mike,Early 1900's homes sometimes had plumbing for an outdoor toilet in the back attached to the house, maybe some of that piping is still there and leaking outside.Also there may be an old plumbing extension buried in the yard that's leaking.

Long story short, the owner of the house got a permit in 2007 to build an extension on the first floor for his wife who had become disabled due to stroke and needed to live downstairs at all times.

@Mike McKinzie In addition to the extensive list of resources @Brian Burke gave you there are a couple of sites that I know of, that you may find useful.

Unfortunately, the few people in my network who meet that criteria don't meet another import criteria: willingness to risk their capital on two guys who have never owned property, nor done extensive renovation work (my partner has done some at the houses he manages and I have done a little, but not much). 

I will call the inspector and ask for an extension.

The property inspection showed some mold in one of the units but we weren't sure how extensive it was.
