There wasnt as many codes etc back then so it all boils down to how and who built it.I would suggest you have a reliable home inspector or builder look it over and discuss your renovations with them to get the best feedback.

With two new people partnering together it's like having dumb and dumber (I know you guys are smart, so that's just an expression) partnering up so that they can burn two years worth of savings on a corperat divorce (not sure if that is faster and cheaper than a real life divorce, ask my friend that is still trying to divide properties after 3 years, many attorneys and many court hearings for code violations...).

I looked at a mailing list generated for 2 of the zip codes there and was surprised how many homes are owned outright or have been owned by the same person for many years.
