It is more expensive, but it is a BUSINESS, you can't cook out of your own kitchen for obvious reasons, let alone it isn't zoned for a business, etc.You can get away with it for a while, but it will eventually catch up with you.

I suspect that some landlords probably charge more than the base rent and probably get away with it because the tenants have nothing to complain about (i.e. they're happy paying the rent, the landlord takes decent care of the building, etc.).

Travel in the JET age is one of the great things to do.15 hours your on the other side of the world.. so for 1k for a ticket your gone..you can get cheap hotels here for 20 a nice and food etc.with your Bay Area winnings you should be able to live indefinitely over seas  LOL
