When my son saw an apartment that he really wanted, I told him to run to the rental office (which happened to be the owner's other place of business), dressed in a suit and tie, with copies of references, credit history, rental history, checkbook, copy of his license, paystubs - basically anything they might want, and fill out the application right then and there, and hand it in.
