I own a house now as primarily residence, we are a family of four so that option didn’t cross my mind. 

Ceiling joists looked to be maybe 2x6 square tubing and then steel cross members going up to the roof rafters that looked like they were just unistrut. 

I've been mentally crossing places like this off my list, but maybe I'm overly pessimistic.Is there a trick to getting furniture and appliances delivered to a place like this that I'm just not aware of?

Sounds like you have a solid plan, we are looking to buy and hold in Spain in the next year, fingers crossed!

A few suggestions:Get a Job, Borrow from Parents/relatives, Get a partner for the deal, or (trigger warning: not PC)  renounce US citizenship, cross the border illegally, and get all the government money you need.
