The son who was POA for the mom we bought from looked like he partied hard back in the day and we found the evidence hiding in the walls :) We originally thought it was the contractors who built the house but they looked like the "newer" syringes and knew for a fact when they were behind the dishwasher since that wasn't original to the house.

Well that fine came along with accrued interest and an additional $5 per day.I bought the house for 19k (which was the fine owed to the city).

Hopefully you bought at the right time and have seen some great appreciation.

Real estate when bought right, over the long term, is one of the best investments.  

I have bought several investments under that price, in fact I just closed two duplexes in the last 30 days for well under that amount.

I bought a home in Durham, NC in 2006 for 130K.

I HAVE NOT bought a property myself yet, or assisted, have only sold a few homes as a listing agent.

I am biased however, since my wife and I bought a 2-flat here in April.
