I would suppose that you would technically pay off a HELOC once you've sold off the asset that you used the HELOC for in the first place.

Are you sure they didn’t say pull it out of the trust, do the financing and then put in an LLC which offers the asset protection a trust doesn’t?

I will add my thoughts though, and say that I'm not sure, but if you are expecting to be sued right now and it's found that you preemptively changed title of your asset(s) to avoid losing it in a lawsuit, that in itself could get you into some trouble.
