Cal:Co-mingling of rent payments and payments on the house (aka financing) can put you afoul of the Taxman here in Canada (and in the U.S.A. too, I believe) who may decide the whole arrangement is an instalment sale which can have unpleasant fallout.In addition, you have Dodd-Frank and the Safe Act to consider in the U.S.A.

If not, then you'll either have to pay utilities for one unit (because that unit is paying for the heat and hot water) or have a separate gas meter installed for the central furnace and hot water heater.

Or, for both, rather than DIY, work some sort of sharecropping or other revenue sharing deal with someone with more time and ambition than land.

Had wholesale access at cost to flooring and installers at cost.

Equipment brand is much less important than the installing contractor.

We gutted our kitchen and need to have some work done such as dry wall taping & installing kitchen cabinets and counter tops that we purchased from another home. 

Usually you have this installed inside the building just where the water comes in for freeze protection.

Has anyone here had experience buying rural land and developing it for renewable energy use / installing wind turbines or solar power on it?

My company does quite a bit of work on the Oregon coast, but we are a little further south (I, of course, would be more than happy to talk to you about interior finish products that we can deliver - but have one of your more local contractors install - ie. flooring, tile and cabinets -being the good sales woman that I am :) .
