Making sure it's warm enough at all times is of course the #1 way to prevent a bursting pipe as they usually burst when they have been frozen then thawed.

The reason is if utilities turn off in a cold belt state massive damage can happen to the property with frozen pipes and other things that could far outweigh some temporary lost rent from a non or partially paying tenant.

Apparently, at some point after the former owner left the place, some pipes must've frozen or otherwise burst and there was major water damage to the kitchen, which has been completely gutted down to the studs.
