it's one of those catch 22 things. you're either too lax with them or too detailed and get the kind of feedback folks in this thread provided. you could've invited him to give you a quote and asked for a more detailed breakdown after giving him the job. it is absolutely necessary to keep these guys accountable for the work they're doing, especially on large(r) projects.
