Is it taxed along with employment income?  

It depends on what the gf and her employing decide.

It is just pass through income taxed at your marginal tax rate plus your full share (15%) self employment tax and state income tax if applicable.

I completed my grad school whilst working professionally and had my employer foot the bill for most of it. 

Then you would verify their employment and rental to see if they do make enough and if they are gainfully employed

@Nick G. makes some excellent points and reminded me that when looking at all of Ventura County you should also be aware that Amgen was/is a huge employer in the area.

My schedule allowed me the time to help her grow up.My wife's employer has been a great man about my problems and only expects my wife, who is a computer programmer, to come to the office for a 1/2 day but pays her full time.
